CLOSE-UP ON JOHN CASSAVETES

“Close-Up on…” is a new series of programs focusing on the work of some of the most important directors throughout the history of cinema. Close-Up is delighted to present five films by director John Cassavetes.

Often hailed as the father of American independent film, John Cassavetes’ maverick approach to film-making captured some of the most honest and genuinely moving portrayals of human emotion ever committed to film. The five films included over the next month represent his self-financed works made outside of the studio system of Hollywood, for which he was afforded complete control.

Populated by beatniks, hippies, businessmen, actors, housewives, strippers, club owners, gangsters and children, the films are beautiful, emotional testaments to compassion.

O
PENING NIGHT

Directed by John Cassavetes
1977 | USA | 138 mins | Colour

Broadway actress Myrtle Gordon (Gena Rowlands) rehearses for her latest play, about a woman unable to admit that she is aging. When she witnesses the accidental death of an adoring young fan, she begins to confront the personal and professional turmoil she faces in her own life. Featuring a moving performance by Rowlands (and with some scenes shot on stages with live audiences reacting freely to the writing and performing), John CassavetesOpening Night exposes the drama of an actress who at great personal cost makes a part her own.

A Seaside Extravaganza!
An End-o-Pier Party!

We're bringing the glitzy-ritzy tack-o-rama of the British Holiday Experience to Bethnal Green!

Why get on a plane this summer, or even worse, visit some recession-raped British seaside resort,

when you can get a distilled version of the whole sordid experience

in a Working Mens Club in East London??

Hold onto your hankies folks, it’s a night of….

* Briny stand-up comedy *

harking back to the vicious misogyny and jovial racism of traditional end o' pier humour!
(* Not really. That wouldn't be nice. In fact, we even have female comics. Fancy!)

* A Red Coat holiday rep *

to guide you through the experience!

* Live music! *

All the classics! Reach for those Stars, my friends!

* A genuine fortune teller *

who will curse your babies!

(This happened to me once, in Leicester Square. Horrible it was. Just because I didn't want her bloody heather. Mad old bitch.)

* Balloon animals *

Really!

* Angry Spanish policemen! *

Oooh, I trust that’s not a nun’s outfit sirrah?

* Cocktails! *

Sex on the Beach? I should co-co!

* Karaoke! *

Are you weeping yet? You will be!

So book now! Regret later!

Mike Strutter Group is the cure to make you pure.

The group features Paul Kaye (ex-Dennis Pennis), Paul Jones (ex-Elastica) and Louis Jones (the Warm Jets).
