WEDNESDAY 27TH FEBRUARY

LONDON PHILOSOPHY CLUB

Clare Carlisle on Kierkegaard and the Courage of Faith

£2 ENTRY FEE // 7PM UNTIL 11PM

PHILOSOPHY

The London Philosophy Club is a place for people who enjoy discussing
all things intellectual
a place to dig deep and discuss ideas that matter.

Each time we meet a topic will be set beforehand and a possible speaker who is an expert in the field will discuss the topic, followed by group debate.

No background in Philosophy is necessary.

You will get to know other philosophy lovers, curious souls, open-minded individuals who love wisdom and the exploration of ideas - in a non-academic relaxed atmosphere, full of debate and challenging topics. We passionately believe that deeper reflection and the examined life is the one worth living.

THIS MONTH:

Clare Carlisle on Kierkegaard and the Courage of Faith

Søren Kierkegaard was born 200 years ago this year. To mark the event, Dr Clare Carlisle will speak at the London Philosophy Club about this great 19th-century philosopher, hugely influential on the development of existentialism and in philosophy and religious studies more widely.

Her theme will be Kierkegaard and the courage of faith, looking at Kierkegaard's intepretation of Abraham in his 1843 book Fear and Trembling. This provocative text challenges readers to make sense of the story of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac, and to defend religious faith against the demands of reason and morality. The talk will focus on Kierkegaard's claim that Abraham demonstrates "a paradoxical and humble courage": Dr Carlisle will discuss why courage is an important virtue, and show how Kierkegaard contributes something new to a long tradition of philosophical reflection on courage.

Clare Carlisle studied theology and philosophy as both an undergraduate and postgraduate student at Trinity College, Cambridge. She has published three books on Kierkegaard, and the first English translation of Félix Ravaisson’s De l’habitude. In addition to her scholarly work she has written numerous philosophical articles for a general audience, including series on Kierkegaard and Spinoza for The Guardian. She currently works on the philosophy of religion, and teaches, at King's College London.
