Welcome to The Double R Club an evening of mystery & nightmares inspired by the films of David Lynch

Expect a darkly surreal cocktail of

"Damn fine" Cabaret & Music, where

"Restless nights and uneasy dreams go with the territory..."

Think the finger-clicking jazz ambience of cult TV show Twin Peaks,

the absurdist monochrome machine world of Eraserhead...

From the dark underbelly of Mulholland Drive,

to the surreal small-town madness of Blue Velvet

A dark and troubling cabaret dream from another place, all served with humour

"Black, like midnight on a moonless night…"

PERFORMING LIVE:

CHRYSALIS ~

a creature in monochromatic nightmare gestates horror beyond all measure…

BLANCHE DUBOIS ~

a lone refugee from tragedy is broken and falling in darkness and confusion…

DES O’CONNOR ~

a maestro casts forth musics to scorch and to seduce, musics from your dreams…

HEAVY METAL PETE ~

an inhabiting spirit “from another place” walks, in dreams, with you…

RODENT ~

sentinel to the ending of everything wails in bitter victory and furious invocation…

KEITH ~

a voice from the cellar of your heart spins songs of love, of loss and of that which lies beyond…

BETTSIE BON BON ~

a solitary figure walks in shadow, luring your very souls to feed her craving…

TRAUMATA ~

in a nameless city deluged by a continuous rain ... a rabbit lives with a fearful mystery…

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
DJ RITU
Dance music turntablist & trailblazing broadcaster DJ Ritu is the voice behind the UK’s definitive
global music show, ‘A World in London’. Her career began in 1986 as a Soul/Disco/Pop DJ in London, and has led to over three decades of globetrotting across 32 countries as a solo artist and band-leader of Sister India and The Asian Equation. She joined the BBC in 1991, presenting shows at BBC London, World Service, and also on Kiss FM, National Swedish Radio, and WDR Germany. A pioneering music chameleon, Ritu is the co-founder of cult label Outcaste Records, one of the driving forces behind the 90's Asian Underground scene, a Rough Guides CD compiler, and the artistic director of the world’s two longest-running Asian music club nights – Club Kali and Kuch Kuch Bollywood Nights.

DJ ISURU
The whole idea of artistic ability and artistic development is that you change it for the time...that you do move it with the time, that you move it forward, you move it ahead of time and that's what experimentation is, it ain't about being morose and keeping it the same for like 200 years, that's b*llocks!" - Sam Zaman
DJ Isuru Is a London based DJ and radio broadcaster presenting on the weekly SOAS Bhangra & Wednesday Session shows. He makes documentaries about experimental, cross-genre and collaborative music. He also curates the new Asian Underground concert series Mishti Dance at Poplar Union. He is known as an alchemist because of his obsession with deconstructing music and song structures to uncover hidden, cross-pollination links between genres. He specialises Bhangra, Bashment, Breakbeat and Acid House but more specifically the philosophy of the Asian Underground and the production philosophy of Sam ‘State of Bengal’ Zaman is his modus operandi

DJ T.T

spinning soulful, dirty, funk vibes all night long.

-------------------------------

The sound of Hackney is changing. The institutions, clubs and scenes are being silenced.
Do 4 Love is a party from the people who have shaped the sound of Hackney.
Join us for a night of dancing and celebration, showcasing the generations who have laid the foundations of the soundtrack to our city.
We’re not here to mourn or moan, we are here to vote with our feet, to preserve our musical heritage, to resist the cultural change the only way we know how.
Hackney will not be closed.
Arrive early, music starts immediately. Book in advance to avoid disappointment.
NEWTON ACE
Newton ‘Ace’ Dunbar opened the Four Aces club on Dalston Lane in 1966. One of the first venues to play black music in Britain. The Hackney club booked Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and Jimmy Cliff. Newton played a pivotal role in the growth of reggae, ska, rocksteady, dub, lovers, dancehall and later, jungle in the UK. In the 90s, the club was transformed into Labyrinth, the first indoor, licenced Acid House venue, where The Prodigy played their first live performance.
Newton is an instigator, a benefactor and changemaker. He has played a pivotal role in the evolution of the music scene in the UK over the last several decades. The club was closed in 1997, repossessed by Hackney Council and demolished in 2007.

LASCELLE GORDON
Hackney’s Godfather of rare groove. Lascelle was one half of The Cat in the Hat, with Barrie Sharpe he launched the London club night in 1985. Known as ‘The Church’ by its followers, The Cat in the Hat was the birthplace of rare groove, an underground scene that broke through barriers. Raised in Hackney, Lascelle played a pivotal role in the evolution of dance music, shying away from the typical 4/4 dancing stomp and back to complex, rhythm and spiritual roots.
Lascelle performed in the Brand New Heavies until 92’, and now plays with Vibration Black Finger and Woven Entity.

ELDICA RECORDS
A cornerstone of the community, 18 years ago Eldica Records opened on Bradbury Street by Annie Joachim Joseph and her husband Andy Westbury. Andy, once a member of 90’s hip-hop rave outfit 2-Mad, hand-pick’s the records. Annie’s great-grandmother Eldica Joachim (the shops namesake) was an influential name amongst the West Indian expatriates and music scene of 50s London.
An Aladdin’s cave of familiar sounds you’ve never head before, Eldica provides vinyl selections of sounds from around the world to the DJ’s and collectors of Hackney. As the area has transformed around it, Eldica has resisted, standing strong through plans to demolish Bradbury Street to aid Crossrail in 2016.

LEXUS BLONDIN
Lexus is the founder of Church of Sound and Total Refreshment Centre - one of London’s thriving jazz scene’s most influential venues. Operating for the last 7 years, TRC provided an open environment for musicians to collaborate and experiment. Starting out as a studio space and evolving into a multi-faceted cultural venue, TRC was the home to London’s new wave of jazz musicians.
Total Refreshment Centre was recently served a notice of closure.

BGWMC is super excited to welcome LADY OLÉ into the family! Lady Olé is a party bridging

Spanish and British queer club cultures

through dance music, bizarro and kitsch aesthetics, and performance!!

Lady Olé is ecstatic to reveal that the foundations to a new home are being layed...

Welcome to the BETHNAL GREEN WORKING MEN'S CLUB or BGWMC. Right at the heart of Bethnal Green/Shoreditch, back to the hood where we saw Pelucas y Tacones go from bottom to top (pun intended).

To celebrate this new era, we have also called in to perform an act that has caused nothing but indifference since their mass media debut on X-Factor. Their looks, their aesthetics, their music, their attitude... we are simply in front of an irresistible trash-glam-queer duo who rocketed to fame singing to a doughnut (Homer Simpson would have loved to cover them!). We are talking about Jirafa Rey y LaPili aka GLITCH GYALS... responsible for the hits 'cómeme el donut', and 'muslona' among others.

This is their London debut, be sure not to miss them!

But, what about the dresscode? the theme? no, we're not doing a bakery special just because there is a doughnut on stage, but we want you to get fierce, wild and raucous and bring out the animal in you.

Easy right? It's tranimal time... what is a tranimal? yes, you guessed it, you dear transvestite friend looking like a drowned harassed Rat or a Lion queen... it's a wild wild furry world out there, so don't be lazy and dress for the occasion.

As we spiral through the subconscious our guiding green vagabond wielding a 7ft mascara wand assures that squares make squares, triangles make triangles and doing things… does stuff. To the accompaniment of Britney Spears and Bette Davis; THE GLOOP SHOW re-stitches the fabric of our reality and charts sublime new political territories.
